Prof. Nazmat Toyin Surajudeen-Bakinde (Nee Olagoke), hails from Ile Ajilo, Popo area in Balogun Ward of Offa in Offa local government area of Kwara State. She works in the department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, University of Ilorin, Ilorin. Nazmat is a proud Alumnus of Offa Grammar School where she was the head girl for two consecutive years. She had her Bachelor of Engineering and Masters of Engineering in 1997 and 2004 respectively from the same department where she works. She was awarded Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Electronics in 2010 from University of Liverpool in United Kingdom.
Prof. Nazmat Surajudeen-Bakinde was selected by the Directorate of Technical Aid Corps, Ministry of Foreign Affairs to serve the Federal Government of Nigeria in a two-year volunteer service in the Gambia University of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology (USET). The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST), the Gambia and the Governing Council of USET established a Taskforce to recruit from the Nigerian volunteers to fill the Vice-Chancellor position and three others. At the end of the interview, Prof. Nazmat was recommended and approval was given for to be appointed as the First Substantive Vice-Chancellor of USET. She is also the First Female to hold such a position in the Gambia.
Prof. Surajudeen-Bakinde specializes in Telecommunications and has published in reputable journals and book chapters with over seventy papers to her credit. She is also a reviewer for local and international journals. She has won grants with her research teams and conducted different impactful researches. Her current research interests include Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Technology for Short Range and High Speed Communications Systems, Channel Equalization and Signal Detection in Wireless Communications Systems, Internet of Things for Home Automation Systems, Television White Space for Providing different Services, Propagation Models for Mobile Personal Communication System, Colocation of multiple wireless base stations, Spectrum Measurements, Terrestrial Radio Propagation, Computation Intelligence in Radio Propagation, Energy Savings in Heterogeneous Networks, Telemedicine, Information and Communication Technologies for Teaching and Learning and Sustainable Energy Diversity.
In her profession, Prof. Surajudeen-Bakinde is a registered member of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and one of the examiners of COREN registration exercise for corporate members. She has also been appointed as a resource person in the COREN accreditation of engineering programmes in some Universities and Polytechnics in Nigeria.
Internationally, Prof. Nazmat is registered with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), UK and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), USA. At home, she is a registered member of the Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE), Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE). She is equally a member of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) and was the Chairperson of Ilorin branch for two years.
Nazmat has equally served the nation in various capacities as resource person for curriculum development and review under National Board for Technical Education, Kaduna, Kaduna State, Development Research Project Centre (dRPC) and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in partnership with Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC). She was a member, Evaluation Committee for the Telecommunications-Based Research Innovations Proposals from the Academics in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions submitted to Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Abuja, Nigeria for three years.
She has served the University in various positions at the departmental, faculty and university levels, locally and internationally. Prof. Surajudeen-Bakinde was an Assistant Director (Administration), Centre for International Education of the University of Ilorin. She was a Level Adviser, a Postgraduate Coordinator, Acting Head of Department, Member of Quality Assurance Committee in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. She is presently heading some committees in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET), like Faculty of Engineering and Technology International Conference for 2024, FET Alumni Committee, FET Welfare Committee, FET Ethical Review Committee. A member of the FET Mock Accreditation Committee and FET Outcome Based Education Committee. At the University level, Prof Surajudeen-Bakinde is a representative of the faculty on the Academic Planning and Curriculum Committee. Member, University Mock Accreditation Committee. She is the Senate Representative on Research Grant Committee. She is an Hall Mistress at The Atlantic Height Private Hostel.
Back home in Offa, Nazmat is a member of Offa Professional Ladies Forum (OPLaF) and was the Treasurer in the last executives. She is also one of the founding members of Offa Engineers and privileged to be the pioneer and first Female President for two years. Toyin was the first Female President of Offa Students Union at the National level while in the university.
Prof. Nazmat is an Adviser to a few students body such as APWEN Unilorin Collegiate, Nigerian Universities Engineering Students’ Association (NUESA), Nigerian Association of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Students (NAEEES), Offa Students Union, Unilorin Chapter.
Hajia Nazmat by Allah’s Rahma is a member of many Islamic organisations such as Loan4Allah, We Care Foundation, Our Sisters Happiness, Together We Care and Pious International Women Organisation that help the Needy, Orphans and Widows in our society. She is the Chairman of a registered non-governmental organisation, MINWAMAH Support and Care Foundation for the empowerment and support of widows and orphans. Nazmat Toyin is married and blessed with three kids to the glory of Almighty Allah (SWT).
